Good ESL
Teacher and Learners
A.
Good ESL Teacher has:
a.
Positive
Attitude
An effective
teacher tries to see the good in situations and makes the most of bad
situations. Having a sense of humor in such situations is important, because a
sense of humor helps ease the tension and encourage cooperation.
b.
Communicative
Skills
A teacher
should be able to develop and maintain relationships with other teachers,
parents, and students through sound verbal and written communication. He/she
must be able to communicate her thoughts and feelings on many issues and also
be able to listen wholeheartedly to their complaints, suggestions, thoughts,
and feelings on issues as well.
c.
Commitment
and Dependability
A teacher needs
to be committed to his/her students as well as to his/her career. Him/her self-
confidence will become evident. Work honestly and openly.
d.
Compassion
and Empathy
Students need
to know that the teacher understands their point of view and that he/she care
about it. He/she should also try to understand their home life.
e.
Organization
Efficiency is a
key in the classroom. Being organized allows a teacher to move from one subject
or topic to another smoothly and quickly. He/she should be able to help his/her students also
become organized and efficient.
f.
Versatility
Each student
has his or her own talents and difficulties. Be willing to help the student
manage those difficulties in the classroom. The teacher should also be willing
to modify instructions when necessary to help students understand better.
g.
Knowledge
The teacher
should be knowledgeable in the things he/she is teaching. Good teachers have a
complete understanding of the ESL content they teach in sufficient depth to convey
the information in meaningful
ways to the students.
h.
Creativity
Creativity with
lessons helps students learn better and retain more of the lessons. The teacher
should be willing to try new ideas or suggestions that come from others. He/she
should also be willing to creatively compromise when doing so will allow
everyone to move forward in a positive manner.
B. Good ESL Learner
:
a. The
good language learner thinks about how she is learning. She tries to find out
what works for her and what doesn't. If she doesn't understand the purpose of a
particular exercise, she asks the teacher.
b. The
good language learner is willing to experiment and take risks. For example, she
will try out different ways of learning vocabulary until she finds the way that
suits her best. She is also not afraid of making mistakes, because she knows
that these will help her.
c. The
good language learner is realistic. She knows that it will take time and effort
to become proficient in English, and that there will periods where she does not
seem to be making much progress.
d. The
good language learner is independent. She does not expect to learn English just
by sitting in the classroom, and does not rely on the teacher to totally direct
her learning.
e. The
good language learner is organized and active. She uses her time to learn
English sensibly, and is always looking for opportunities to develop her
language both inside and outside of the classroom.
f. The
good language learner has a balanced concern for communication and accuracy.
Some students are experts at communicating their thoughts but do not care that
they make many mistakes in doing so. The good language learner, on the other
hand, is concerned with both communicating and doing so as accurately as
possible.
